THE WEST RIVER.

LUK LAO SHELLED.

It is reported in Canton that H.M.S. Robin has shelled the village of Luk Lao, where the steamer Lingklung was

fired upon the other day, in retaliation for that outrage. The gunboat is said to have bred two hundred rounds from ber machine guns and to have occasioned the ringleaders in the attack on the Linghiang being flogged by the Chinese Authorities. The gunboat Sandpiper has beeu stoned near the same place, but it is said that on the matter being reported to the British Consul at Canton he advised the commander of the gunboat to take no notice. The Canton Consul is also credited with having forbidden the captain of the Lingkiang to use the Luk Lao channel. Such consular action is not cal culated to impress the Celestial with the inviolability of the British flag. It is, we imagine, rather calculated to make him say, "why there's a Britisher, let's heave a brick at him."

Strange to say the Authorities here state that they have received no information on the sub- ject of the Robin's exploit at Luk Lao, though the Naval Authorities admit that the reported istoning of the Sandpiper is true.
